Madison Heights is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 31,101.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.2 mi2 (18.5 km2) . All of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,101 people, 13,299 households, and 8,005 families residing in the city. The population density is 4,341.3/mi2 (1,677.1/km2). There are 13,623 housing units at an average density of 1,901.6/mi2 (734.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city is 89.60% White, 1.82% African American, 0.44% Native American, 4.97% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 2.68% from two or more races. 1.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 13,299 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $42,326, and the median income for a family is $51,364. Males have a median income of $41,478 versus $29,345 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,429. 8.9% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.8% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Originally part of Royal Oak Township, Michigan, Madison Heights incorporated as a city by popular vote on January 17, 1955, and chartered on December 6 that same year, becoming the tenth city government in South Oakland County. At that time, the 7 square mile City was the second largest in South Oakland County. Madison Heights ranked as fifth highest populated City in South Oakland County. The first City Hall was located at 26305 John R Road, the former township offices. On April 5, 1963, a new municipal building was constructed which is on the present location at 300 West Thirteen Mile Road. The City lies in the I-696 and I-75 corridor and is served by two primary school districts, Lamphere and Madison, as well as a full-service municipal government.
Madison Heights is part of Oakland County's Automation Alley. With 23 Shopping Centers, 11 Hotels, more than 860,000 square feet of office space, and seven Industrial Parks that include 10,000,000 square feet, Madison Heights lives up to its motto, "City of Progress."
While 91% of the buildings in Madison Heights are single-family homes or condominiums (approximately 9,800 residential property owners), 60% of the tax base is high-yield light industrial/ commercial. Madison Heights was named a "High Tech Hot Spot" by a local magazine. The city's average number of fires per 1,000 people is 4.12, well below the national average of 6.7 fires per 1,000 people. There are more than 112 miles of road within Madison Heights, of which the City maintains 105 miles (95 miles for snow removal, sweeping, and patching). The city contains 15 voting precincts, totaling more than 21,000 registered voters.
Madison Heights celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005.
